Siem Reap: temples in the morning, the hotel after

Angkor is the reason to come, and the heat is the reason the hotel matters. The pattern that works is simple: temples from early morning until about 11:00, then lunch, the pool and the shade, then out again only if you want to.

What Siem Reap is, plainly

Siem Reap is a town that exists for Angkor. The archaeological park covers some 400 square kilometres and holds the remains of the Khmer Empire's capitals from the 9th to the 15th century. UNESCO listed it in 1992, and the park still sets the rhythm of the town: early starts, quiet afternoons, busy evenings in the centre.

The famous temples are busy. Angkor Wat at sunrise draws a crowd every morning of the dry season, and the Bayon and Ta Prohm fill by mid-morning. A private guide who knows which temple is quiet at which hour is the single most useful thing you can add here, more than any upgrade.

Why the hotel matters more here than anywhere

You will spend three or four hot mornings climbing steps in the sun and come back by noon. What you come back to is the trip. This is the place on our routes where we are least likely to suggest a 4-star hotel instead.

Two stays show the range. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor opened in 1932 and stands in the town on Charles de Gaulle Boulevard, the road that leads to the temples. Amansara has 24 suites with their own garden courtyards, in a building of 1960s New Khmer architecture that was once a residence for the guests of King Sihanouk; it is about ten minutes from Angkor Wat and about an hour by car from the airport.

How many nights, and why fewer goes wrong

Three nights gives two full temple mornings with the afternoons free. Four nights gives three temple mornings and one day with nothing in it, which is the version we prefer. Two nights means one morning at the temples after a travel day, which shows you Angkor Wat and little else.

The 3-day Angkor Pass is valid for any three days within a week, so it fits a four-night stay without having to visit on consecutive days.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDSiem Reap

November to February is dry and the least hot. March to May is very hot, with mornings ending early. June to October brings rain, usually in heavy afternoon bursts, and the moats and ponds fill.

The rainy months are underrated. Mornings are often clear, the countryside is green, the temples are quieter, and hotel rates are often lower. If you choose them, schedule the temples early and expect a wet afternoon.

Getting in and out

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport lies well outside the town, about an hour by car from the hotels near the park. Regional links that matter for our routes:

When to leave Siem Reap out

  • You travel in April and do not cope well with heat; the temples become a test of endurance
  • Temples are not why you travel — Siem Reap has little else to build a stay around
  • You can only give it one night; the airport drive and a single morning are not worth the flights
  • Steep, uneven steps are a problem; several of the main temples involve them
Hotel names

Hotels on this site are named as public facts taken from each hotel's own website, with the date we read it. Naming a hotel does not mean we hold a contract, an allocation or a special rate there. Room rates are not published here; your quote carries the rate available on the day you confirm.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is sunrise at Angkor Wat worth the early start?

If you sleep well, yes, but you share it with a crowd. A guide can suggest a quieter temple for first light.

Town hotel or one near the park?

A town hotel puts restaurants on your doorstep; one closer to the park puts the temples ten minutes away and is quieter. Both work for three nights.

How much walking is involved?

Four to six kilometres a morning, with steep steps at several temples. Your guide can plan around limits.

Do we need a visa for Cambodia?

That depends on your passport. Check Cambodia's official government rules for your nationality and apply only through government sites, never look-alikes.
