Four journeys, counted in nights
Each route below is a starting point, not a package. It shows where you sleep, for how long, how many times you change hotel and how you move between stays. Change any of it; the logic stays.
Compare
The four routes side by side
| Journey | Days | Stays | Shortest stay | Flights | Good months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indochina Grand Stays | 16 | 5 | 1 night (boat) | 4 | Dec – Apr |
| Vietnam Heritage Hotels | 12 | 3 | 3 nights | 1 | Feb – Apr |
| Cambodia & Laos in Slow Luxury | 9 | 2 | 4 nights | 1 | Nov – Feb |
| Vietnam North to South, Beach Finale | 14 | 4 | 1 night | 3 | Feb – Aug |
Every price is on request. That is not a sales tactic: at these hotels the room is the largest part of the cost, and it moves with date and category. The pricing page sets out what changes the total and how we show it on the quote.
How to read a route
We count a trip in stays rather than in sights. A stay is a run of nights in one bed. The number that matters most is the shortest stay: if it is two nights or less, that stop is mostly travel. Our sample routes keep every land stay at three nights or more, with two exceptions we explain on the page: a single night on a boat in Halong Bay, because the bay is the stay, and a single night in Ho Chi Minh City before a long-haul flight.
The second number is hotel changes. Each one costs roughly half a day: checkout, the car, a flight or a long drive, check-in, unpacking. The 16-day route has four changes because it crosses three countries. The 9-day route has one. If a route has more changes than you want, the first thing to cut is a stop, not the nights in the stops you keep.
The third is flights. Regional flights between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are short — Hanoi to Luang Prabang is scheduled at a little over an hour — but some run only a few days a week. Where a flight runs three times weekly, the order of your trip is set by that flight, and we say so on the route.
Which route for which traveller
Three countries, one trip
For a first visit that wants Hanoi, Halong, Hoi An, Angkor and Luang Prabang in one go, accepting four hotel changes. Indochina Grand Stays.
Old buildings, few moves
For travellers who care about where they sleep as much as what they see: a 1901 hotel in Hanoi, a riverside stay in Hue, then a beach resort near Hoi An. Vietnam Heritage Hotels.
Two places, long stays
Four nights near Angkor and four in Luang Prabang, one flight between them. Cambodia & Laos in Slow Luxury.
Cities first, sea last
Hanoi and Hoi An, then five nights on the south-central coast before flying home from Ho Chi Minh City. North to South, Beach Finale.
What every route includes
- The nights listed, in the room category named on your quote, with daily breakfast
- A private car and driver for every transfer and every touring day, not shared with another booking
- A private English-speaking guide on the days marked as guided; free days have no guide unless you add one
- Domestic and regional flights the route needs, in economy unless you ask for business
- Entrance tickets for the sites on guided days
International flights, visas, insurance, most lunches and dinners, and tips are not included. The full lists sit on each journey page, and how to book explains the steps from first message to confirmed rooms. For the places themselves, see the destination pages.
When none of these fits
The four routes are samples. Most trips we plan start from one of them and change two or three things: a different hotel in one stop, a night moved from one place to another, a beach added or removed. Some start from scratch with a hotel the traveller has wanted to stay at for years. Both are normal.
What we will push back on is a route with too many stops for its length. If you send us eleven days and six places, we will reply with eleven days and three or four places, and explain which ones we dropped and why.
Hotels on this site are named as public facts taken from each hotel's own website, with the date we read it. Naming a hotel does not mean we hold a contract, an allocation or a special rate there. Room rates are not published here; your quote carries the rate available on the day you confirm.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Can I change the hotels on a sample route?
Yes. The hotels shown are examples of the setting and level each route is built for. Swap any of them; the hotel comparison shows alternatives in each place.
Do you run set departures?
No. Every journey is private, for one party, on dates you choose.
What is the shortest trip you plan?
Our shortest sample is nine days across two countries. Shorter trips work inside one country, with one or two stays at most.
Are flights in business class?
Regional and domestic flights are quoted in economy by default. Where a sector offers business class on your dates, we price it on request.
